“In astronomy, a patch of faint, hazy light sometimes observable at night on the point of the ecliptic opposite the sun; it is associated with the zodiacal light.”

Gegenschein was created by Steven Arenius in June 2018 during the Visual Studies Workshop Summer Institute, following workshops with Nando Alvarez-Perez and Scott McCarney. All images were taken from VSW’s lantern slide and still image archives. Text was taken from “Gegenschien Observations” by A. E. Douglass (1894) as well as a nearby dictionary.
